Our take

AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation to an open-ear design. Apple offers a standard model and a version with a Wireless Charging Case, and the differences extend beyond how the case charges. This makes checking the exact package more important than simply recognizing the AirPods name.

Why consider it

An open-ear shape may appeal to someone who dislikes the sealed feel of silicone-tipped earbuds. Apple lists the H2 chip, noise-control modes and supported ecosystem features. For an existing Apple user, that combination can be a useful starting point for comparison. Fit and actual listening comfort still need to be judged by the person wearing them.

The tradeoffs

An open-ear design is not the same physical proposition as an in-ear seal. We have not measured how either approach performs in a cabin, on a train or beside traffic. Apple also distinguishes the Wireless Charging Case version through features including volume swipe controls and battery specifications. Do not transfer a feature from one package to the other without checking.

What to compare

The meaningful question against AirPods Pro 3 is whether you prefer an open-ear shape or adjustable silicone tips. Against wired EarPods, the tradeoff is freedom from a cable in exchange for charging, pairing and a case to keep track of. Those choices are personal enough that a universal winner would be misleading.

Before you buy

Verify the standard versus Wireless Charging Case version, compatible devices and the availability of any language or software features you want. Compare current total prices on the day you buy. This is a research-based assessment, not a claim that we have measured the advertised sound, cancellation or battery improvements.
